Health & Medicare Insurance FAQs

Answers to common questions about Medicare and health coverage in Houston and surrounding areas.

What are the different parts of Medicare, and what do they cover?

Medicare has four main parts.

Part A covers hospital care

Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient services

Part C (Medicare Advantage) combines A and B with extra benefits

Part D helps cover prescription drug costs.

How do I know if I am eligible for Medicare, and when can I enroll?

Most people are eligible at age 65, or earlier with certain disabilities. Your Initial Enrollment Period starts three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after.

What is the difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage?

Original Medicare includes Parts A and B, with optional Part D and Medigap for added coverage. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurers and bundle A and B (and usually Part D), often with extras like dental, vision, and fitness programs.

Do I need additional coverage beyond Original Medicare?

Yes, many clients choose Medigap or Medicare Advantage to reduce out-of-pocket costs and gain coverage not included in Original Medicare.

How much does Medicare cost?

Part A is usually premium-free if you’ve worked long enough. Part B and Part D require monthly premiums, and Medicare Advantage plans may also have premiums, copays, and deductibles. Costs vary by plan and income.

What does Medicare not cover?

Medicare does not cover most dental, vision, hearing, or long-term care services. Prescription drug coverage is only included if you enroll in Part D or an Advantage plan with drug benefits.

Can I change my coverage if my needs change?

Yes. You can switch plans during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7), the Open Enrollment Period (Jan. 1 – Mar. 31), or during certain Special Enrollment Periods if you qualify.
